Do Toys and Batman Ruin Female Super Hero Movies?

A little while back, I had a conversation with some friends about comic book movies. It stemmed from Iron Man airing on TV; which led to someone mentioning how much they disliked Pepper’s portrayal in Iron Man 3 as the “damsel in distress” until the climax of the film. They argued that the movie fails to optimize her character in lieu of a trope, but let’s put aside the fact that Pepper has almost always been an ancillary character.

The conversation then moved on to “Why are there no comic book movies featuring a female heroes?”

Where am I going with this? Well, with recent news that Katee Sackhoff may play a major role in an upcoming Marvel Studios film (which is hopefully as Captain Marvel); I thought I would give my thoughts as why there have been no successful comic book movies featuring a female hero and how the sales of toys and success of Batman hinders a movie coming out.

Review: Don Jon

I haven’t done one of these in a while; but I could not pass up sharing what I thought about Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature length writing/directorial debut. Not to mention it is the first film to come out from HitRecord, which is the production lovechild of JGL. Natalia and I went to a screening last night and here are my thoughts on the movie.

Ben Affleck to Don the Cowl

This is interesting. DC Comics has come out and shocked the world by announcing who would play opposite of Henry Cavill in the sequel to Man of SteelIf the title of the article did not make it obvious; former Daredevil star, Ben Affleck, will don the cowl as Batman. A very intriguing casting choice but with recent success in The Town and Argo; this choice has some solid footing.

Swing past the jump to read some quotes from Zack Snyder as well as the eloquent words from Kevin Smith.

Rocket Raccoon Ninja’d

Without much surprise, a few seconds of the Guardians of the Galaxy video shown at San Diego Comic Con has appeared on the internet. While the video is continually taken down; it is not that difficult to track it down (so I’ll leave that up to you).

But what I do have is a GIF that will keep me excited for the next year until the movie comes out.

New Thor 2 Trailer Punches In

Marvel has released a new trailer for Thor: The Dark World which features both more of the action and more Loki. Take a look!

We may have our first glimpse of Algrim/Kurse (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) behind Loki in the Asgardian prison cell. We also see a Kronan. Extreme wishful thinking, but could this be an early tease for Korg in a Planet Hulk movie? I know, I know. Kronans originally appeared facing down Thor in an issue of Journey Into Mystery, but a guy can dream!

New Ender’s Game Trailer Annihilates

Ender’s Game continues to be one of my favorite science fiction books (regardless of author’s opinions I don’t agree with and possible boycotts). I’ve anticipated this movie all year and they just released the second full trailer.

This is a great second trailer because it shows a lot of the action beats and little bit of the drama behind it all. The Battle Room looks gorgeous, the Command School scenes are even more vivid that I imagined. All in all, the trailer looks great.

Don’t just take my work for it; hit the jump to see it for yourself.
