Moonrise Kingdom: A Review

An impromptu date night was made perfect with this adorably off beat love story. Wes Anderson is one of my favorite film makers because he creates a world that is odd and makes our own awkward traits seem miniscule in comparison. His stories have flawed dissatisfied characters that eventually find a way to deal and gives hope to the rest of us.

When compared to his other films Moonrise Kingdom stands out because of the hopeful tone of the precocious youth. Wes Anderson’s trademark use of color and picturesque environments are ever present and really help to frame this story. You are transported to New England in 1965 on a sparsely populated island where the young lovers live. Sam Shakusky (Jared Gilman), an orphan, is on a mission to run away and start a life with his lady love; young Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward). Suzy is the daughter of two attorneys Walt and Laura played by Bill Murray and Frances McDormand respectively. The two met the previous summer while Suzy performed in a church performance of Noye’s Fludde by Benjamin Britten (whose music is present throughout the film) and began a pen pal relationship. Through the year their letters were filled with stories of how misunderstood and outsider the two kids are and a plan to run away was born.

Marvel Phase One Revealed and Expanded

Can anyone deny that Marvel Studios’ planning for The Avengers was nearly masterful? What could make it any better? How about owning it? How many questions can I ask before getting to the meat of the article?

Marvel Studios has revealed the Marvel: Phase One Blu-Ray box set and it is a piece of nerdvana. You get all six movies and each respective special features, plus Blu-Ray 3D versions of Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and The Avengers. You also get a bonus disc with new bonus features. As you can see above, each movie will have some beautiful cover art. All of this comes in a replica of Fury’s briefcase complete with glowing tesseract to make all my dreams come true.

Oh yeah… There’s one more thing to be included in this amazing box set.

Batman: Arkham… Prequel?

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are two of the best comic video games ever created. Developer Rocksteady Studios is obviously hard at work at another installment even teasing back in December at the VGAs. Well, Variety is reporting Rocksteady’s new Batman game will be a prequel  featuring Batman’s first encounter with Joker. Also, the game will feature Batman’s Justice League cohorts including Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash.

There are a couple questions that come to mind. Will characters like Superman and Wonder Woman be playable or only appear in cameos? Who will voice the Joker with Mark Hamill claiming retirement from the character?

Also considering recent news that (a) Nolan will not be involved in future DC movies and (b) no possibility for new DC films after Man of Steel before 2015, I’m hoping this game manages to give me my DC fix in 2014, as that would be the earliest possible release. I’m also hoping DC and Warner Bros. gets their act together and utilizes their laundry list of characters in film soon. I’m loving Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series, but I really want to see them on the big screen!

Cheap Date: July 11th SDCC Edition

Welcome to anotherCheap Date, where I would usually help you decide were to spend $30 of your hard-earned cash on nerdy entertainment for you to enjoy. It is also a Comic-Con edition, so instead of our regular routine I will point out some of the exclusives that I am excited for and will probably drool over as they go for a 200% mark-up on eBay.

This week, we will go way beyond the thirty dollars…

CYaN San Diego Comic Con Survival Guide/Pack

San Diego Comic Con starts this Thursday (Wednesday if you are one of the lucky ones that got into the Preview Night) and still for many it will be their first time going to a convention, so I will try to help everyone on what you should and should not do when attending probably the biggest convention.

First, let’s start with what you should carry on you as you walk through the convention center.

Survival Pack

Alright, I have heard two schools of this: one side says that you should not carry a backpack/messenger bag through the halls and then there is the side that says that you can. Personally, I say as long as you are weary of the bag and not knocking into people then you should be fine. Remember there are a lot of people around so do not go swinging that bag whether it be by your side or on your back.

Now what do I recommend to bring?

Entertainment

Any way you cut it, you will be waiting for long periods of time throughout the weekend. I recommend bringing a portable game system, an eReader, mp3 player, a regular book, and a trade paperback.

I still have my Nintendo DS “Fat” to this day, which will let the time fly by. I use an iPod Nano for all my music and audio books. Then I have my Kindle Fire for digital comics and other media. What all these have in common is that they have a finite life. Even if you alternate use, batteries will die. That is why I recommend a regular book and even a trade to make spark some conversation with other con-goers, my current choices include The Name of the Wind which Natalia has been writing about and for the trade I have been rereading the Lucifer series written by Mike Carey. Any way you cut it, this should be able to entertain you if you are stuck in Hall H or waiting for another panel.

Hygiene/Health

Attending Comic Con usually means that for four days you are staying in a hotel and spending about twelve hours each day surrounded by people. No matter what you do, you should always take a shower and brush your teeth. Imagine the smell that would come around if everyone spent the four days just gathering their own stick. There was this guy I knew that stayed with my friends in their room, but for the entire weekend he did not shower for some reason. By the end of the weekend, no one wanted anything to do with this guy. SHOWER AND BRUSH YOUR TEETH EVERYDAY!

Yes, you will be on the convention floor for hours and might not want to interrupt something by going all the way back to the hotel room. Well, Colgate was nice enough to have these Wisp disposable toothbrushes. You do not need water or anything of that nature, just scrub. Anyone who is on the receiving end will thank you if you just step away to brush your teeth during the convention.

You should also just take care of yourself. Everyone is touching everything and not everyone is going to follow the general rules of hygiene. That is why you should bring hand sanitizer, just a little bottle will be fine. But you should wipe your hands every so often as you go through the trenches. Other personal care is completely optional; but you can bring along chap stick and other small items of the sort. I also bring a bottle of water and a granola bar or trail mix to help me through the day. Remember food is expensive, and you need to keep hydrated.

Other

There are celebrities, awesome artists, and more walking around and signing throughout the weekend. I bring a small sketch book for when I get sketches from artists so I do not have to keep track of a lot of loose paper. I also bring a Sharpie for when anything needs to be signed. The last item I would recommend bringing is a charger. Outlets are pretty much nowhere but if you are lucky you can recharge that phone of yours so it will finish out the day.

Schedule

San Diego Comic Con is four days of geek shopping, movie trailers, video games, comic book news, and a lot of events. You are going to want to go to everything, but trust me when I say: you can not. Look at the schedule and find your favorite panels and signing, then add at least an hour if not more to the front end of it just to be in line not to mention the time it may take to walk to where you want to be. If you just want to see all the major Hollywood highlights, just find a seat in Hall H and plant it there for the entire day. That is just the way it is.

But if you are patient and time out your schedule then you will be able to see a lot of things.

As far as swag goes, the only time you need to buy things right away are the exclusives (even then only if it is numbered to be only about a 5000 production run). If you want to do any other type of shopping, it is Sunday you want. On Sunday the panels and other events are light as everyone is packing up and going home. But always keep an eye on how many items are being sold, if you play this right then you can actually pay for the entire convention by selling off your swag. Even the free WB bags that they hand out can go for a bit of money.

Beyond all that, have fun and be safe. Hope you all enjoy Comic Con.

Coldplay Comic Book Series: Mylo Xyloto

Though not unheard of, the collaboration between the music world and comic world is still rare. I am not any sort of comic book aficionado, but when Umbrella Academy (written by Gerard Way front man of My Chemical Romance and illustrated by the oh so talented Gabriel Ba), was released I was well aware and even requested copies for myself. Today when reading Rolling Stone I came across this announcement of another comic series from the minds of Coldplay and decided to share.

During Comic-Con this week you may catch some news about a six part comic series, being published by Matt Groening‘s Bongo Comics Group, about the character Mylo Xyloto. The band Coldplay along with Mark Osborne an academy-award winning director and writer created this character a few years back with the storyline that inspired their latest album by the same name:

“It is the story of Mylo Xyloto, a young Silencer on the front lines of a war against sound and color in the world of Silencia. Mylo discovers that the enemy he’s been trained to hate his whole life might not be the enemy after all. There will hopefully be many, many connections for people who have heard the album.”

If this is something you fancy and you happen to be wading in the pool of nerdy bodies that is comic con this week there will be a panel to celebrate the first issue’s release on July 13th.

Uno! Dos! and Tre! news

Green Day is really gearing up for their most ambitious project yet. As we reported last month they have already been releasing Teasers. Their trilogy of albums so named: Uno! Dos! & Tre! are set to be released between September and January. When asked what their motivation was they related their a-ha moment:

“The songs just kept coming, kept coming. I’d go, ‘Maybe a double album? No, that’s too much nowadays.’ Then more songs kept coming. And one day, I sprung it on the others: ‘Instead of Van Halen I, II and III, what if it’s Green Day I, II and III and we all have our faces on each cover?'”

They are not stopping with music though, they are also releasing two documentaries to go along with them. When asked what these docs were about Billy said:

“It’s not going to be the sitting down, head shot of me going, ‘We started out blah blah blah’,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Billboard. “We wanted to get into lifestyles of rock & roll and playing rock & roll and letting the story kind of tell itself rather than create revisionist [history].”

Uno! is set to be released on September 25th of this year, but if that is not soon enough for you the first single “Oh Love” will be available on July 16th.

Day Two of the Kingkiller Chronicles: The Wise Man’s Fear

The Wise Man’s Fear

As you may have read I recently finished the first book in the Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy. I was so impressed that I finished the second book; The Wise Man’s Fear, shortly after and have been trying to put into words what I thought about it. Kvothe develops greatly in this installment and it is hard to sum up because he feels like different people throughout the story.

To recap this trilogy is based on the true telling of the main hero Kvothe’s life. He recounts his life over three days (three books) to Chronicler, a traveling scribe, in order to have the truth out in the world instead of the lavish exaggerated tales. The world in which Kvothe lives contains science, magic and adventure. He attends the university (there is only one) and learns sympathy; a form of alchemical magic. This magic proves most useful in many of his adventures and helps to mold his legend.

This particular installment is filled with Mercenaries, the Fae, Sympathy and so much action you feel a bit dizzy at times. This story has a great message that is used to further the story and helps to develop Kvothe. The thing that keeps this story exciting is that Kvothe is one person in the present who is obviously lost spiritually and in the past is just a boy who is learning about life through his mistakes and amazing adventures. Neither one of these versions of our protagonist is fully realized and it is exciting to ponder where he may end up by the end.

What I got from this story… (Spoilers ahead)     Read More…

Game of Thrones: Minecraft Edition

If you are like me, then you might already be sucked into the game Minecraft. The game where you can demolish everything you see and build it up into anything you want it to be. Minecrack, as some people are calling it, has already come up interesting maps which include working computer boards,Star Trek’s Enterprise, and so much more.

I am also a Game of Thrones fan, along with Ricky and Natalia. The Westeroscraft community has set out to create the Seven Kingdoms all inside the PC version of Minecraft.

It is amazing, just amazing.
