Avengers Phase One Blu-Ray Update

So as you may remember from the podcast, I was extremely excited and had preordered the Phase One Blu-Ray collection. Rimowa GmbH sued Disney and Marvel Studios due to similarities between one of their models and the replica of Fury’s briefcase. Up to this point Amazon had simply changed the Blu-Ray collection status to under review and stopped taking preorders. Well, people who preordered the Blu-Ray have now been updated.

We’re writing to let you know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One-Avengers Assembled Collection will not be released by Marvel as originally expected. Instead, Marvel is planning to offer a similar collection in new packaging. The new collection will include the original titles offered with the first version of the item, and is expected to be available in the spring of 2013. To make this easy for you, we updated your order for the original collection and will ship the new collection when it becomes available. The price of the new collection will be the same as the original collection.

To show our appreciation for your understanding, we are providing you with a promo code to receive a free copy of Marvel’s The Avengers (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) . To be eligible, you must have placed your order between June 1, 2012 and August 28, 2012. Any cancelled orders are not eligible to receive the free copy. Codes must be redeemed by October 15, 2012.

Basically, Amazon is offering a free copy of The Avengers to ensure that customers receive something on the release date. I’m a little hesitant to jump at this now until we get a confirmation on what the new version will be and a solid date.

Marvel Phase One Revealed and Expanded

Can anyone deny that Marvel Studios’ planning for The Avengers was nearly masterful? What could make it any better? How about owning it? How many questions can I ask before getting to the meat of the article?

Marvel Studios has revealed the Marvel: Phase One Blu-Ray box set and it is a piece of nerdvana. You get all six movies and each respective special features, plus Blu-Ray 3D versions of Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and The Avengers. You also get a bonus disc with new bonus features. As you can see above, each movie will have some beautiful cover art. All of this comes in a replica of Fury’s briefcase complete with glowing tesseract to make all my dreams come true.

Oh yeah… There’s one more thing to be included in this amazing box set.

Marvel NOW! Presents Uncanny Avengers

Last week we heard about a slew of launches and creative shuffles coming from Marvel under the banner Marvel NOW. Today, Marvel released the cover of the first issue to Uncanny Avengers on Entertainment Weekly’s site.

Uncanny Avengers will be penned by Rick Remender with art by John Cassaday. The creative team certainly looks interesting (I am a big fan of Remender but worried Cassaday will get his work in on time). With a title like Uncanny Avengers, we think it would be a mash-up of Avengers and X-Men. The cover shows the team with Thor, Havok, Scarlet Witch, Rogue, Captain America and of course Wolverine. Definitely an interesting mash-up of a team, half Avengers with half X-Men. There will be interactions that we would not normally see.

Hopefully next week’s reveals during San Diego Comic Con will be just as interesting.

Creative Shuffle Now Called Marvel NOW!

Comic-Con is coming and that means exciting news barreling toward us for comics, movies, and more. So the Marvel creative shuffle we’ve been talking about on the podcast is now a relaunch with a lot of new titles, new costumes, and new #1’s. Entertainment Weekly has revealed this relaunch is titled Marvel NOW!, and here are some details.

Spider-man, Hulk, Jean Grey, Nova, Nick Fury Jr., Captain America, Rocket Racoon, Wolverine, Cyclops, Invisible Woman, Cable, Thor, Iron Man
Image Property of Entertainment Weekly; Artist: Joe Quesada

Uncanny Avengers will be from writer Rick Remender and artist John Cassaday. The series will feature an Avengers team comprised of mainstays such as Captain America and Thor as well as mutants Wolverine (already an Avenger) and Havok (who Remender promises to make a character to watch).

Avengers from Jonathan Hickman will feature a large cast of Avengers at about eighteen and who all are at the moment a mystery, save for one: Shang Chi. Hickman is known for his meticulously plotted stories in SHIELD and Fantastic Four, and I am definitely looking forward to this book no matter what characters are in it.

And Bendis is definitely moving into the X-Men side of the Marvel Universe with All-New X-Men which will feature the original X-Men (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel, and Beast) time-traveling to the modern day.

And that piece of art shown above features some of the costume redesigns with art from Joe Quesada. Captain America appears to be taking some fashion tips from Ultimate Cap and movie Cap. The armored Hulk begs the question: What the HELL does the Hulk need armor for (aside from Planet Hulk)? Hopes for a new Guardians of the Galaxy series are reinvigorated by the appearance of Rocket Raccoon. And the Cyclops redesign makes me hope for the time-traveling Iceman and Angel to see modern Cyclops and start laughing uncontrollably.

Iron Man 3 Continues to Expand

Could this be a sign of what’s to come? (Pun completely intended.)

Thanks to io9

Over at io9.com, they’ve got set photos from Iron Man 3 that feature one of Marvel’s major crime organizations. From the looks of it, Marvel Studios and Shane Black are legitimizing AIM as a legitimate engineering lab. My guess is that a) this is a front for the Mandarin (Kingsley) and b) Killian (Pearce) and Hansen (Hall) work here. I’m excited as this gives me hopes for some large scale world development. As I mentioned in Kapow 101, Hawkeye does mention SHIELD’s enemies; AIM can definitely be counted amongst them.

Ka-Pow 101: Looking at Marvel’s Movie Future

As the country has decided to move past the Avengers and onto the rest of the summer movies, I decided to continue informing you about the future of the Avengers movies. Marvel Studios is already working on continuing and expanding the Marvel movie universe. I don’t know all the upcoming details, but I’m going to take this opportunity to speculate based on the information that I do have. We’ll look at movies that have been slated for release, are in development, and are rumored to be made. There will be potential spoilers in this article, but many of these will be based on comic stories. Let’s continue, shall we? Read More…

Ka-Pow 101: Wibbly Wobbly Avengers Time Stuff

So readers have really been enjoying the Avengers stuff lately. I wonder why. Well let’s add on another layer. You’ve all seen the movies. You know they all are connected. But do you know the timeline? Well now you can. Marvel has released Avengers: The Art of Marvel’s the Avengers (that’s not a long title). Inside you can find a copy of the movie universe timeline. It’s actually a very well-made infographic. Check it out.

I don’t know how much longer we’ll do these Avengers features, since we’re approaching the releases of Amazing Spider-man and Dark Knight Rises. I’ll definitely put up one more lesson looking at the future of the Avengers films.

Ka-Pow 101: Avengers’ Next Villian

Avengers is almost a week old. While I can write a glowing review on the awesome move that is the Avengers, but instead I want to explain to the audience about a guest appearance in the movie. Ka-Pow 101: Avengers Assemble

Finally, here comes another lesson in Ka-Pow 101. Syncing up with today’s release, we’ll take a look at the Avengers. To be specific, we’ll look at some of the characters who haven’t featured in their own movies.

Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson

Black Widow is Natasha Romanoff, an agent of SHIELD. We got to see her in action in Iron Man 2 as the SHIELD spy keeping an eye on Tony Stark. But where did she come from? Natalia Romanova (wait, what? yeah… Americanized names! Go!) was trained from her youth to be a master assassin in the Soviet “Red Room” program which trained young girls. She was granted bio- and psycho-tech enhancements (whatever that means), and planted with memories of an alternate youth. She eventually defected from Russia, and became a member of SHIELD.

Hawkeye played by Jeremy Renner

Hawkeye is Clint Barton, yet another agent of SHIELD. We briefly glimpsed him in Thor watching over Thor’s assault on the compound studying his hammer. Trained in the circus to be a master marksman, Barton was not originally recognized as a hero. During his first outing as Hawkeye, he is accused of theft and goes on the run from the Avengers. Wait a minute. It looks like things have changed for the movie. The question is, “When do we get to find out more?”

Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders

Maria Hill is Maria Hill… oh, never mind. You get it. SHIELD agent. Anyway, she is the most recent addition to the Marvel Universe of these three. Hill appeared in comics in 2005 as a replacement to Nick Fury who had gone rogue. As the Executive Director, she was in control of SHIELD during the reformation of the Avengers following the massive prison break of super-villain prison, the Raft. In the comics, she initially worked against the Avengers, but it appears she’s going to be backing them whole-heartedly in the film.

What other changes are made in the film? We’ll find out this weekend in The Avengers as well as future films.
