Ka-Pow 101: Avengers’ Next Villian
Avengers is almost a week old. While I can write a glowing review on the awesome move that is the Avengers, but instead I want to explain to the audience about a guest appearance in the movie. Before I move on, anyone that has yet to watch this amazing movie should know that there will be spoilers.
WARNING SPOILERS FOR END CREDITS OF AVENGERS!!
During the end credits for the Avengers; we venture to a desolate asteroid field where the general of the Chitauri is reporting to his superior. The general states to take on Earth and the Avengers would be “to court Death.” Then turning with a smirk is Thanos, the Mad Titan.
Thanos is an alien mutant from Titan, a moon of Saturn. Thanos is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. He has been a scourge to the galactic environment of the Marvel Universe for over four decades. Much different from the world threats such as the Red Skull or Magneto. For perspective, other analogs for villains on Thanos’ scale would be the Phoenix Force as seen in the X-Men movies and Galactus from Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
What is funny about the quote from the Chitauri general is the mentioning of courting Death. In the comics, Thanos is in love with the personification of Mistress Death.
How do you court Death? By killing, lots and lots of killing.
Thanos’ major feat is that he actually accomplished to kill half of the Marvel Universe using the Infinity Gauntlet. The Gauntlet, shown on his left hand in the picture and created for last year’s San Diego Comic Con, has six Gems that basically transforms the user into a god-like creature. When I say god-like, I do not mean like Thor. The god-like I mean is the omnipotent, shaping of reality kind. Each of the Gems controls a certain aspect. These aspects are Soul, Time, Space, Mind, Reality and Power.
He is eventually defeated, but he continues to come back to life and bringing devastation upon the universe just to impress Death.
Thanos is a bad ass, to say the least.
It is unclear if Thanos is the true villain for the Avengers sequel or for another one of the Marvel Studios movies, such as the rumored Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Either way, I applaud Marvel for showing us a view into the larger universe with this choice in villain.
