Cheap Date: Oct 10th
Another week and another new edition of Cheap Date has arrived! In case you are unfamiliar with this weekly article, I will recommend an allotment of nerdy entertainment that I think you should definitely check out this week and altogether it costs no more than thirty bucks. Because we all know how expensive being a nerd can be.
Head on past the jump to read my recommendations.
Let me just begin by saying that this week was extremely tough when it came down to narrowing it down to $30. A lot of really cool things are releasing this week. We must persevere.
What this also means is that if you are not happy with my recommendations this week, then you also have quite a library of options to choose from including the just released game Dishonored which has received some great reviews already (although that one is a $60 purchase).
Without further ado here are my recommendations:
Books – $13
Humble eBook Bundle
You may already be familiar with the Humble Bundle. They usually provide great deals to awesome indie computer games for a “pay what you want” price. They have strayed away from games before once. Last time they did something different, they did the Humble Music Bundle with MC Frontalot, OK Go and a few other acts. This time they are doing the Humble eBook Bundle which is again DRM free for any tablet, phone, or eReader. If you pay more than the average you get two books that I have eyed for a long while but have not gotten a chance to read Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean’s Signal to Noise as well as John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War. The average as of this writing is $12.28 which is less than the price of those two books plus you pick up six more. Good deal.
Comics – $3.99
Batman #13
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!
Like I mentioned, there are plenty of comics that should probably pick up as well including Hickman’s final issue on Fantastic Four, the first issue of Uncanny Avengers, or even an interesting concept from Steve Niles in Transfusion #1. But without a doubt, you have to pick up Batman #13. You need to read this series. Scotty Snyder and Greg Capullo are undoubtedly one of the top teams in the industry. Then comes the fact that this will be the first return of the Joker after having his face peeled off more than a year ago in Tony Daniel’s Detective Comics #1.
If that image to the left does not excite you to see what demented work Snyder will have the Joker do, then I do not know what will.
Movies – $11
“Viewer’s Choice”
Alright, another hard choice and I took the easy way out. I let you choose which movie to go to this weekend. There are four “fresh” movies coming out according to Rotten Tomatoes, which should not be your deciding factor.
Either way, there are four pretty good to Oscar-worth movies that are out this weekend. If you are in a October-scare mode there’s Sinister, if you want something funny and heartwarming there’s Here Comes the Boom, if you want the Oscar-bait movie then you have Argo, then of course if you want something a little more offbeat then Seven Psychopaths is your poison of choice.
My personal choice will be Seven Psychopaths because I love the cast and the awkwardness of it all. But I would be happy watching any of the four movies this weekend.
I guess that will do it for me this week. I hope you have a fun time with everything I recommended today. See you next week for our Cheap Date.
