It is also a Comic-Con edition, so instead of our regular routine I will point out some of the exclusives that I am excited for and will probably drool over as they go for a 200% mark-up on eBay.

This week, we will go way beyond the thirty dollars…

CYaN San Diego Comic Con Survival Guide/Pack

San Diego Comic Con starts this Thursday (Wednesday if you are one of the lucky ones that got into the Preview Night) and still for many it will be their first time going to a convention, so I will try to help everyone on what you should and should not do when attending probably the biggest convention.

First, let’s start with what you should carry on you as you walk through the convention center.

Survival Pack

Alright, I have heard two schools of this: one side says that you should not carry a backpack/messenger bag through the halls and then there is the side that says that you can. Personally, I say as long as you are weary of the bag and not knocking into people then you should be fine. Remember there are a lot of people around so do not go swinging that bag whether it be by your side or on your back.

Now what do I recommend to bring?

Entertainment

Any way you cut it, you will be waiting for long periods of time throughout the weekend. I recommend bringing a portable game system, an eReader, mp3 player, a regular book, and a trade paperback.

I still have my Nintendo DS “Fat” to this day, which will let the time fly by. I use an iPod Nano for all my music and audio books. Then I have my Kindle Fire for digital comics and other media. What all these have in common is that they have a finite life. Even if you alternate use, batteries will die. That is why I recommend a regular book and even a trade to make spark some conversation with other con-goers, my current choices include The Name of the Wind which Natalia has been writing about and for the trade I have been rereading the Lucifer series written by Mike Carey. Any way you cut it, this should be able to entertain you if you are stuck in Hall H or waiting for another panel.

Hygiene/Health

Attending Comic Con usually means that for four days you are staying in a hotel and spending about twelve hours each day surrounded by people. No matter what you do, you should always take a shower and brush your teeth. Imagine the smell that would come around if everyone spent the four days just gathering their own stick. There was this guy I knew that stayed with my friends in their room, but for the entire weekend he did not shower for some reason. By the end of the weekend, no one wanted anything to do with this guy. SHOWER AND BRUSH YOUR TEETH EVERYDAY!

Yes, you will be on the convention floor for hours and might not want to interrupt something by going all the way back to the hotel room. Well, Colgate was nice enough to have these Wisp disposable toothbrushes. You do not need water or anything of that nature, just scrub. Anyone who is on the receiving end will thank you if you just step away to brush your teeth during the convention.

You should also just take care of yourself. Everyone is touching everything and not everyone is going to follow the general rules of hygiene. That is why you should bring hand sanitizer, just a little bottle will be fine. But you should wipe your hands every so often as you go through the trenches. Other personal care is completely optional; but you can bring along chap stick and other small items of the sort. I also bring a bottle of water and a granola bar or trail mix to help me through the day. Remember food is expensive, and you need to keep hydrated.

Other

There are celebrities, awesome artists, and more walking around and signing throughout the weekend. I bring a small sketch book for when I get sketches from artists so I do not have to keep track of a lot of loose paper. I also bring a Sharpie for when anything needs to be signed. The last item I would recommend bringing is a charger. Outlets are pretty much nowhere but if you are lucky you can recharge that phone of yours so it will finish out the day.

Schedule

San Diego Comic Con is four days of geek shopping, movie trailers, video games, comic book news, and a lot of events. You are going to want to go to everything, but trust me when I say: you can not. Look at the schedule and find your favorite panels and signing, then add at least an hour if not more to the front end of it just to be in line not to mention the time it may take to walk to where you want to be. If you just want to see all the major Hollywood highlights, just find a seat in Hall H and plant it there for the entire day. That is just the way it is.

But if you are patient and time out your schedule then you will be able to see a lot of things.

As far as swag goes, the only time you need to buy things right away are the exclusives (even then only if it is numbered to be only about a 5000 production run). If you want to do any other type of shopping, it is Sunday you want. On Sunday the panels and other events are light as everyone is packing up and going home. But always keep an eye on how many items are being sold, if you play this right then you can actually pay for the entire convention by selling off your swag. Even the free WB bags that they hand out can go for a bit of money.

Beyond all that, have fun and be safe. Hope you all enjoy Comic Con.

Game of Thrones: Minecraft Edition

If you are like me, then you might already be sucked into the game Minecraft. The game where you can demolish everything you see and build it up into anything you want it to be. Minecrack, as some people are calling it, has already come up interesting maps which include working computer boards,Star Trek’s Enterprise, and so much more.

I am also a Game of Thrones fan, along with Ricky and Natalia. The Westeroscraft community has set out to create the Seven Kingdoms all inside the PC version of Minecraft.

It is amazing, just amazing.

CYan Podcast Episode 11: Credit Where Credit’s Due

Zombie Playground: Z World Detroit

My brother, Ricky, has often talked about not being satisfied with the choices out there for zombie survival reenactment (Run For Your Lives, The Walking Dead Escape). He had a whole bunch of ideas, but it looks like someone beat him to the punch. At least as far trying to fund the idea.

Welcome to Z World Detroit. It will be 200 acres of abandoned buildings in Detroit. This land will be turned into a zombie amusement part where you and some friends try to survive an overnight adventure where you hide and scavenge. Sounds like an excellent time, but I wonder how they will actually get this off the ground. They are currently trying to crowd source the funding, but the logistics must be a nightmare. I can not imagine how much the insurance for this place is going to be or who would really want to work a daily job of being a zombie. Either way, if they actually get this off the ground then I may find a reason that I need to visit Detroit.

Marvel NOW! Presents Uncanny Avengers

Last week we heard about a slew of launches and creative shuffles coming from Marvel under the banner Marvel NOW. Today, Marvel released the cover of the first issue to Uncanny Avengers on Entertainment Weekly’s site.

Uncanny Avengers will be penned by Rick Remender with art by John Cassaday. The creative team certainly looks interesting (I am a big fan of Remender but worried Cassaday will get his work in on time). With a title like Uncanny Avengers, we think it would be a mash-up of Avengers and X-Men. The cover shows the team with Thor, Havok, Scarlet Witch, Rogue, Captain America and of course Wolverine. Definitely an interesting mash-up of a team, half Avengers with half X-Men. There will be interactions that we would not normally see.

Hopefully next week’s reveals during San Diego Comic Con will be just as interesting.

Real Life Hot Wheels

I meant to put this up earlier, oh well. Anyway, I was out Saturday night and happened to look over my shoulder at a TV that was on SportsCenter at the bar. Apparently Team Hot Wheels decided to set a world record over at the X Games in LA this past weekend. The stuff you can do nowadays is completely amazing.

I mean I never got one Hot Wheel to do that, seriously.

End Credits of Amazing Spider-Man

Alright if you are here, then you probably have already watched The Amazing Spider-Man. But on the off-chance that you have not seen the latest movie for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man after the jump will be nothing but spoilers. So warning SPOILERS…

Why Gwen Instead of Mary Jane in the Amazing Spider-Man?

Non-comic book fans may be asking themselves, “Why is Gwen Stacy in Amazing Spider-Man, the first movie of the reboot, coming out tomorrow?” Or hell why is Gwen Stacy a better choice than Mary Jane in this darker movie franchise?

The simple answer is that while Uncle Ben proved to be the inspiration of Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy is the one mistake that he can never live down nor draw inspiration from. It is the one failing grade Spider-Man has received in his career that stays with him to this day.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Gwen Stacy is Peter Parker’s first true love. Yes, he has dated around and many fans would argue that Mary Jane is Peter’s only true love. Gwen is Peter’s college romance, the one that normal people may say that “got away.” The thing is that Peter is not normal. His version of “got away” is a series of heroic downfalls that ultimately end with a single sound effect.

In the comic book universe; Peter will eventually go on to marry Mary Jane Watson, live a life of balancing between Spider-Man and the husband of a supermodel. That seems like a pretty good life to me. Yes, it is a challenge with some strife that comes from being a hero but he is married to a model!

On the other hand, we have Gwen. Her father was a police chief that would be killed by falling rubble during a battle. A death Gwen blames Spider-Man. Gwen’s relationship with Peter is off and on as well. Then there is the fateful storyline The Night Gwen Stacy Died. Pretty much a big spoiler there. The Green Goblin, knowing the identity of Spider-Man, decides to torment the Webslinger. He kidnaps Gwen and tosses her off a bridge. Spider-Man tries to save her by shooting a webline to catch the damsel. Unforeseen, the sudden stop from the web attaching to Gwen’s leg causes her to snap her neck and die.

I really do not know if they are going this route for the movie, but if they are going for a darker tone then Gwen Stacy is the love interest they need. The struggles Peter has being Spider-Man and loving Gwen is one that can be played much more difficult than Peter trying to hide his dual identity from Mary Jane. Not to mention, if they kill Gwen then they have all the angst and torment that Spider-Man still carries around to this day in the comics.

Unfortunately for the character, Spider-Man is at his best when dealing with a death. He carries the burden for every death. First Uncle Ben, then Gwen (not to mention a few others). These deaths add up. Thank god for his proportionate spider-strength. And that is why Amazing Spider-Man needs Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane Watson.
