Free Comic Book Day – Loot!

Free Comic Book Day  / California Bookstore Day has come and gone and I must say we made out like bandits. The bookish awesome kind of bandits anyway. This year the CYaN staff took it to the next level and hit up independent bookstores and the local library sale to celebrate. As you can see from the picture the selection is pretty varied. (click on the links to see what was available and more info on what we got).

Reach Out And Touch Faith

Religion and Science find a rebellious foothold in this 6 issue series about the second coming of Jesus Christ. Sean Murphy is the writer and artist of this brilliant story of a media saturated society and how they shaped Jesus’ second coming. Jesus is brought back as a clone named Chris Fairling. This child is born to a virgin on international television and raised in front of thousands of cameras; Truman Show style. The series follows Chris’ struggles to be who his genes destine him to be. Along for the ride is a tough as titanium head of security, former I.R.A. member, Thomas “The Cemetery” McKael. On the surface the story begs the question of who Jesus would be in our current world. How would the rebellious spirit manifest itself in this day and age? Punk Rock, duh!

Coldplay’s Hurts Like Heaven Mylo Xyloto Music Video

Coldplay just released an illustrated music video for their song Hurts Like Heaven. It follows a band of rebels who are running from soldiers of the silencer army. Everything they touch is splashed with color and music, which makes this monochromatic environment much more interesting. The song is definitely overpowered by the story which is making this music nerd excited for a comic book! The first issue is set to be released in February of 2013. Watch and let me know what you think in the new forums page. Enjoy!

DVR Weekly: 5-28-12

Life can get pretty busy, so the invention of the Digital Video Recorder, aka DVR, has been a godsend for those of us who love television programming. Well, I’m one of those people. Ka-Pow 101: Looking at Marvel’s Movie Future

As the country has decided to move past the Avengers and onto the rest of the summer movies, I decided to continue informing you about the future of the Avengers movies. Marvel Studios is already working on continuing and expanding the Marvel movie universe. I don’t know all the upcoming details, but I’m going to take this opportunity to speculate based on the information that I do have. We’ll look at movies that have been slated for release, are in development, and are rumored to be made. There will be potential spoilers in this article, but many of these will be based on comic stories. Let’s continue, shall we? Read More…

Sorry about the lateness of this post. The Sherlock special post will be coming up this weekend.

Community – Eps. 3.20-22 “Digital Estate Planning”, “The First Chang Dynasty”, “Introduction to Finality”

These were some amazing episodes. An 8-bit episode where we get “Troy and Abed spitting lava!” “The First Chang Dynasty” rounds out the over-arcing story of Chang’s takeover. It was a great homage to Heist movies specifically Ocean’s Eleven. And finally “Introduction to Finality” wraps up the season nicely. We get some resolution on the Evil Abed thread and Troy’s destiny in the Air Conditioning School. This episode definitely had an interesting sense of “finality”. On one hand, the question of cancellation loomed over head while writing this episode, but on the other, the fact that Dan Harmon will be leaving raises the question of how well the show can do without him.

Young Justice – Ep. 2.04 “Salvage”

In this episode, we find out where the other three missing members from five years ago have gone. Wally/Kid Flash has retired to settle down with Artemis. I thought it interesting that Wally is benched at a time that he is missing in the DCnU. We also found out that Roy is on the hunt for the original Speedy. There is an intervention of sorts featuring Wally, Dick, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and the Guardian. The parallels between Roy’s unwavering focus and Speedy’s drug addiction in the comics are apparent, but very well done. We also learn that Cheshire and Roy have had Lian. If this show doesn’t make you nostalgic for the old DCU, you haven’t been reading comics long.

Short list this week so I can focus on Sherlock.

I’ll see you all next week… same DVR channel… same DVR time…

Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC Trailer

We talked about it for a little bit in last week’s podcast, but here’s the trailer for Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC for Batman: Arkham City. Take a look.

Sets up the story and shows what is going to be happening. It looks like the majority of the game takes place in Arkham City’s Industrial District where Joker set up camp in the main story. The game will be split as you spend time playing as both Batman and Robin. I’m looking forward to see exactly how much more Batman lore we’ll get from this story. Will there also be more hints to future games (Arkham World?). We’ve only got a few weeks to find out.

Ka-Pow 101: Wibbly Wobbly Avengers Time Stuff

So readers have really been enjoying the Avengers stuff lately. I wonder why. Well let’s add on another layer. You’ve all seen the movies. You know they all are connected. But do you know the timeline? Well now you can. Marvel has released Avengers: The Art of Marvel’s the Avengers (that’s not a long title). Inside you can find a copy of the movie universe timeline. It’s actually a very well-made infographic. Check it out.

I don’t know how much longer we’ll do these Avengers features, since we’re approaching the releases of Amazing Spider-man and Dark Knight Rises. I’ll definitely put up one more lesson looking at the future of the Avengers films.

“Arrow” Trailer

Warner Bros. and the CW has been trying to capitalize on the success of Smallville for a long time. First, there was the pilot for the Aquaman show, Mercy Reef. There was the short-lived Birds of Prey. Recently, rumors and test footage of a Jaime Reyes-led Blue Beetle have been flying around. But now, we have to prepare ourselves for Arrow, based on DC’s Green Arrow. Hit the jump to read the synopsis and see the trailer. Read More…
