Justin Timberlake The 20/20 Experience Volume 1.

Overall, the album is easy to listen to. Justin has this smooth voice that can transport you to the crooners of yesteryear and yet he has these beats that keep you grounded to the here and now. Suit and Tie is easily one of the best singles on the radio right now. His second single, Mirrors, is also breaking up the monotony of back to back Rihanna songs on every station.

Justin has this sound that is different than what most artist are doing in Pop music right now, but his core song inspirations have remained true to the persona he has created for himself though his solo career. Each song is meant to woo this beautiful young thing that has the potential to be his one true love. Each song pounds this message into your head and I am sure that it will be a hit, but perhaps I expect more. Read More…

Sound City’s butterfly Effect.

“In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where a small change at one place in a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state. ”

This documentary chronicles how a studio changed music history forever. Beatles mania lead to the creation of Sound City, their Neve board lead to Fleetwood Mac and on and on. So many bands were born there and it shows how much Sound City meant to these artists. Dave Grohl had his pick of participants for this documentary and created a soundtrack to commemorate its influence in rock n’ roll history.

I highly recommend this for music fans and pop culture enthusiasts. Maybe you history buffs would enjoy it as well. Audibly amazing and equally stunning visually. Dave Grohl’s enthusiasm for this project really shaped this documentary into something rare. You begin to care for this delapitated building just because of the influence it has had on so many people. Grohl’s featured guests are all top notch and watching them perform together in Studio 606 is a once in a lifetime moment captured on film.

This is a must watch.

Music News: 20/20 to be a two parter?

Justin Timberlake apparently just let his creative flag fly while in the studio because there were too many songs for just the one album. Rumor has it, he is splitting the tracks in half and having 20/20 volume two ready to drop in November of this year. Hmmm…. right in time for my birthday.

Jimmy Fallon broke the news on his music forum page after spending a week with Justin, Questlove and the roots. (Have you guys watched the barbershop quartet version of Sexyback? Its great.) Justin is trying to break out of the usual path of pandering to 18 year olds. He wants to make music that will appeal to the more mature generation as well as the ‘after 86 sect’. He told Jimmy,

“why do we put all of our power in the hands of 18 year olds….i wanted to make a joint that 40 year olds would love too.  and by the time the video came out all the 86 after sect were aboard again.”

Part one of 20/20 is available tomorrow, so head to your local independently owned record store to purchase your copy, or scrounge up those iTunes gift cards!

Dave Grohl’s Keynote speech for SXSW

The man with a plan this week is, hands down, Dave Grohl. His documentary ‘Sound City’ was released this week along with the amazing soundtrack. I have been playing the bonus features like crazy to try and wrap my mind around the massive-ness that was SOUND CITY. Do you know who recorded there? That is a question for another post, but a hint will come from a performance by the Sound City Players that are performing at this year’s SXSW.

This year Dave Grohl is the keynote speaker.  For all of us that have watched a Dave Grohl performance (TV or Live), you know he is a well spoken and outgoing presence. I would have just attributed these qualities to years of performing, but he humbly credits his folks, saying:

“My father wrote speeches for politicians in Washington and worked on Capitol Hill for 20 years. My mother is a forensics coach. She’s a public-speaking coach, so she teaches debate and she’s a brilliant woman … So one of the things I know to do is not to read a speech.”

His confidence in this year’s speech stays on the right side of modest, as he admits that Bruce Springstein’s speech last year is going to be a hard act to follow. He jokingly remarked,“That was like the Gettysburg Address. He laid it down.”

The speech is taking place in Austin 12pm EST, and for those of us unable to attend it is being streamed live. Since this is a live post, I will be updating once a video of the full speech is available. Stay Tuned.

I am in page-turning love with this author…

Over the past months I have shared the authors who make my heart go boom and have the unique ability to transport me. Patrick Rothfuss and Carlos Ruiz Zafon are two of the authors who came out of nowhere, for me, and they are about to have a lady friend to keep them company on my shelves; Tiffany DeBartolo.

I was doing my usual Goodreads search when I came across a comment from an online buddy, she was raving about a book that was so good she had basically highlighted each line. This book is called, How to Kill a Rockstar.

I have finished this book and if I could choose only one quote to prove its worth I guess it would have to be this one:

“Fate is the magnetic pull of our souls toward the people, places, and things we belong with.”

More after the jump (no spoilers).

The Game of Thrones S3 Trailer

George R.R. Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire explores the dichotomy of the elements in human nature. The show is visually stunning and pulls those elements into the world these characters live, fight, and scheme in.

As I have mentioned the CYaN staff did a 6 month marathon read of the series and we get together and watch the show. We are loving each minute, so you can imagine how jazzed we were when the trailer dropped arrived.

This trailer has so many teasers of story lines from book 3 A Storm of Swords. We see glimpses of Wildlings, dragons in flight as well as a potential unsullied army. The Lannister’s are still moving the pieces on the board and we see more of the aftermath from the battle of Black Water Bay.  While none of this was said explicitly, the trailer does help the loyal fan jump to these conclusions.

I have some stills and the full trailer after the jump. Read More…

Guess whos back, back again Shadys back, tell a friend

I’m pretty excited to share this news because Eminem is one of my favorite hip-hop artists ever. (Can you tell I grew up in the 90s?) A while ago he was spotted in a customized hat with the years of his previous albums and 2013 which set off a whole bunch of speculation from the fans that a new album was in the works. This time the fans were right because apparently he has been in the studio working hard to drop a new album.

Paul Rosenberg the president of Shady records revealed that Eminem is, “ Far into the process… we fully expect to be releasing a new Eminem album in 2013. He’s been working on it for some time.” Okay 2013…. But when in 2013?? Rosenberg goes on to say, “It’s safe to say that it will be post-Memorial Day at some point, but we’re not exactly sure when. We’ve got some dates locked in for him to perform live in Europe in August, so we’re trying to see what else lines up.”

I’ll keep you posted.
